Information on Varna

The weather in Varna

The port of Varna

Varna is Bulgaria's third largest city. It was an inhabited place even before the Greeks established the colony of Odessos there about 580 B.C. Later, under the Romans and their successors, the Slavs, Varna became a major port trading with Constantinople, Venice and Dubrovnik. In 1393 it was captured by the Turks, who made it an important military centre.

Today, the continuous efforts to improve the organization and quality of work together with the flexible trade policy make the port of Varna the best established and profitable port.

In 2001, Varna was the number one in handling of dry cargo in the country.

Buildings and musea in Varna

The 19th century Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin (The Assumption Cathedral) is an imposing landmark, which contains a finely carved iconostasis and bishop's throne, some interesting murals and stained glass.

The 2nd century thermae are the remains of the largest Roman public building in Bulgaria. During this century enough has been revealed by archaeologists to give a good impression of the original layout, though some parts of the building remain hidden under nearby streets. Coming across an extensive ancient building amidst the streets and houses of a modern city is not unusual in Bulgaria, but is always a delight. For more information, you may visit this page.

The thermae are situated in front of the Bimedis residence of Dimitrovy.

Rimsky Termi (Roman Baths) The Assumption Cathedral of Varna

A place worth visiting in Varna is the wonderful Botanical Garden, a branch of the University of Sofia. Its ten hectares surround the small summer palace of the Romanian Queen Marie. (The area was part of Romania between 1913 and 1940). The attractive villa has the unusual addition of a minaret, said to have been built for the Queen's Turkish over.

The gardens are set on a steep hillside, and descend in six terraces to the sea - supposedly one for each of the Queen's children. There are over three thousand varieties of shrubs, roses and flowers, set among streams, waterfalls, and ornamental channels. There is a rock garden, a formal French one with clipped box cones and geometric beds, and an astonishing collection of cacti. Interspersed are stone thrones, seats, pillars and ornaments collected by the Queen.

The archeological museum of Varna is very famous. More information can be found on one of the following two pages:

Black sea

During the holiday season, July and August, the sunshine allows 10-11 hours of sunbathing. The sea is amazingly calm and free of dangerous tides. On the beautiful white beaches several streams of hot sulfuric mineral water find their way to the black sea (cherno more). Along the coast line of Varna there are loads of beach resorts where you can sit and have a drink or a small meal. When you want to, you can hire a parasol for a day for only 3 Leva (USD 1.5). There are also some fields to play beachvolleybal and the beaches are not overcrowded and only a ten minute walk away of the Dimitrovy appartment.

The beach offers several modern beach resorts. One beach resort offers some slides that run with hot mineral water. At night the beach resort transform into hip open-air discos.

Food in Bulgaria

Because of its geographical position and long history Bulgarian cuisine is a mixture between the Slavonic, Greek and Turkish cuisines. The basic food products used in the Bulgarian cuisine are beans, milk, yogurt, cheese, tomatoes, potatoes, apples, water-melons, grapes, etc. Bulgarians eat also pork, beef, lamb, chicken and fish. National specialties include: Shopska salad (sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and parsley topped with grated sheep's cheese); and tarator (a cold soup of chopped cucumber, walnuts and yogurt). White sheep's cheese baked with eggs is another favorite. Other typical items on the menu include kavarma (individual casseroles of pork or veal, onions and mushrooms), shishkebab, stuffed vine or cabbage leaves and moussaka. Yogurt too, tastes better in Bulgaria, its country of origin. Another Bulgarian specialty is banitza (pasty).
